The most noticable moving part on your mountain bike is undoubtedly your Bottom Bracket.  If it's in good condition then it will allow you to pedal effortlessly.  If it is worn, dry or won't turn easiy then pedalling becomes more difficult. 

The same is true of Headsets where smooth operation will make steering a pleasure.  You dont want your steering to seize up on twisting singletracks, with trees.
