Simply Running Duathlon, Skidby – 20th June 2012

Wednesday 20th June. Race report for the second of six, Simply Running Duathlons. This consisted of a 2-mile out and back run of Skidby, two laps of the 10-mile bike course looping incorporating Skidby, Little Weighton, North Ferriby and Raywell followed by a second lap of the run course. We Love Mountains were represented by Steve Coates (@steve_coates8), James Bray (@jameswbray) and Tom Macdonald (@tom_mac64). The race was a mass start and Steve quickly established a big lead (≥30 seconds) over the field of 20. James and Tom both posted respectable times (13:30 and 15:09 minutes, respectively).

The weather conditions were good so a fast bike split was favourable. In a continuation of his run Steve was able to show how much he has improved on the bike this season by smashing his last season’s time by over 45 seconds. Behind Steve the battle for second was closely contested by James and ex-team mate Paul Noble. Paul had the edge on the bike and come into T2 with a 45 second lead. Tom was still in close contention of a top 5 finish with a strong bike split.

The second run leg saw some very fast times from members of Barracuda Tri club but Steve kept hold of first spot by a huge 3 minutes. James knew that if he wanted that second spot he would have to really work hard to catch Paul. After 1-mile James did it and overtook Paul to secure second. Tom had a great battle for a top five spot but unfotuatly just missed out and finished 6th 30 seconds behind 5th place. Great racing by the WLM boys with Steve in 1st (1:19:59), James in 2nd (1:23:00) and Tom in 6th place (1:29:09), respectively.
